Cuddalore: Untreated effluents that spilled out from a textile unit situated on the SIPCOT Industrial Estate here on Saturday night made its way to a pond in nearby Kudigadu village, contaminating the waterbody.

Residents of Kudigadu voiced objection to indiscriminate letting out of effluents by Loyal Super Fabric.

The pollution would cause irreversible damage to environment and affect the quality of groundwater, they said.

On information, District Environmental Engineer of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) A. Raja deputed officials to monitor the situation.

He told The Hindu that following heavy rain on Saturday, the drainage carrying effluents might have overflowed.

Tankers have been deployed to bale out effluents from the village.

Executive secretary of the Consumer Federation Tamil Nadu M. Nizamudeen said that the incident occurred following a leak in the pipeline that carried the effluents to a treatment plant.
