Cuddalore to have ship building yard

The Chennai-based Good Earth Maritime Ltd has proposed to invest Rs 1,000 crore in Cuddalore for setting up a world class ship building yard and had applied to Tamilnadu Maritime Board for project clearance.

In connection with the project, Anandan, chairman and managing director of the company and Dr Shin, its technical advisor and also chairman of Korea Maritime Consultants, met the Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the Secretariat today.

According to an official release, out of the proposed investment, Rs 500 crore would be invested in the first phase and the yard would employ nearly 5,000 people directly and give indirect employment to 20,000.

Union Environment and Forest Minister A Raja and State Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy, State Minister for Highways and Ports M P Saminathan, Chief Secretary L K Tripathy, Tamilnadu Maritime Board chief executive officer B R Sampath were among those present during the meeting the company officials had with the Chief Minister.

Later, Singapore Minister of State for Trade and Industry S Iswaran called on Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. He also met Local Administration Minister M K Stalin and Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy.
