Firms to pay Rs.35 lakh each to provide piped water connection in Eloor

KOCHI: The State Pollution Control Board will collect Rs. 35 lakh each from four companies in Eloor to provide piped water connection to people in five wards of Eloor.

Merchem, FACT, IRE and HIL will have to provide the funds for being responsible for pollution of water sources in the area. This was decided at a meeting convened by the chairman of the State Pollution Control Board here on Friday.

The Board will hand over the funds to Kerala Water Authority within three months. It will provide all assistance to the Authority to initiate work on providing water connection to the residents in five wards of Eloor. The Board will come up with a scientific formula to allocate the Rs.2.5-crore fine imposed on industrial units for polluting the Periyar River. The plan will be drafted within three months. An environment surveillance team comprising officials of the regional office of the Board will monitor pollution of the river. Cleaning of Kuzhikandam creek will be undertaken after the visit of experts from Central Pollution Control Board on January 23.
