Eight persons sustained burns when a steam pipeline in the SIPCOT Industrial Estate here developed a snag on Thursday. The injured include three employees and five contract workers.
It is stated that when some of the contract workers of the Tagros Chemicals India were attempting to open a valve of the pipeline, as part of maintenance, a hot jet of steam injured those in the vicinity. They have been admitted to a private hospital here. General Secretary of the Consumer Confederation Tamil Nadu, M.Nizamudeen, a consumer and environmental activist, said that engaging unskilled contract workers for crucial tasks was the reason for such accidents.
He also stated that lapses on the part of the regulatory agencies in carrying out regular inspections also resulted in laxity on the part of the chemical companies in adhering to safety aspects.
He pointed out that the post of Inspector of Factories was vacant for more than a year now.
