Six held for hurling petrol bombs at chemical unit

CUDDALORE: Six persons were arrested on Wednesday on charges of hurling petrol bombs at an upcoming mega chemical unit in SIPCOT industrial estate here recently.

According to police, Chemplast industries had proposed to set up a multi-crore PVC manufacturing unit at SIPCOT. Local residents and an environmental group had been opposing the move.

Meanwhile, the government had given the nod for setting up the unit and the construction work begun several months ago.

On Thursday last, a 50-member gang had descended on the site and attacked the security guard and the drivers.

The gang then hurled petrol bombs at the unit and fled the spot. Three persons, including the security guard and a JCB driver, suffered burns.

Cuddalore Old Town police registered a case in this connection and launched a manhunt for the culprits. Based on orders from Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar, a special team led by Inspector Krishnarajan and SI Udaykumar was formed.

On Wednesday, the team nabbed six persons – Chozhan (28), Dharmadurai (25), Sunder alias Shanmugasundaram (23), Rajasekar (20), Panneer (19 and Muthukumar (20) from Semmangkuppam near a railway gate.

Investigations revealed that Rajasekar and another person Ramachandran had mixed poison with water stored in an overhead tank at Poondiyankuppam. A search is on for the prime accused – Saravanan and Venkatesan.
