Gummidipoondi, May 21, 2005: The newly elected Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Gummidipoondi, Mr. K.S. Vijaykumar, promised the community representatives that he will ensure that the hazardous waste landfill proposal gets rejected from SIPCOT Gummidipoondi. He gave this assurance to the group of representatives from Gummidipoondi including the local panchayat president who met him at his residence today. The MLA gave a patient hearing to the villagers, who informed him about the problems regarding the landfill and the threats it would pose to the land, air and water and human health in the region. The villagers also briefed the MLA about the history of their opposition to the landfill and gave him a petition signed by people of Gummidipoondi against the proposal. The MLA told the representatives that it was his responsibility to protect the health and natural resources of the area and he would do the needful in this matter.
