Arkema Peroxides pollution ongoing

Cuddalore, 7 March, 2006 — SACEM monitor S. Pugazhenthi reports that Arkema Peroxides is routinely discharging toxic effluents illegally into the River Uppanar. The French multinational has been responsible for several instances of river pollution in the past, where fisherfolk have reported a black, oily deposit on the water. According to Pugazhenthi, “There is a black oily foam-like layer characteristic of the discharge from Arkema. I don’t know what time they let out the water. But I am seeing it regularly these days. When I take those black bubbles and press them between my fingers, tt leaves a dark black colour on my hands.”

A complaint will be lodged with the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board today.
