Southen Pigments Shut Down

Cuddalore, 28 February, 2006 — After repeated complaints to the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board, Southern Pigments has repeatedly been shut down by the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board. However, it is not clear whether the Board will prosecute the company for operating the factory without valid consent or authorisations. The Environmental Protection Act, 1986, empowers the Board to launch criminal action against the owners/operators of the facility for environmental violations. However, this clause is almost never used by the Board.
