Chemplast Cuddalore Operates Without License: Villagers Challenge Plant

Cuddalore 9 October, 2009: — Residents of Semmankuppam and the Semmankuppam Consumer and Environment Protection Organisation today hung a banner outside the newly opened PVC factory stating that the company does not have a license to operate. A 1-month consent to operate granted under the Air and Water Act by the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board expired on 30 September, 2009. The villagers alleged that the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board was acting in collusion with the company, and said the operation of a highly hazardous factory in the vicinity of a residential area exposed how seriously the Board views issues of environment and safety.
