Worker loses both feet at accident in JSW Siscol

 

1 September, 2010, Mettur: One worker, R. Palaniappan, aged 50, lost both his feet while doing maintenance work on a 10 mm steel rod cutting machine at around 10.30 a.m. on 31 August, 2010. The accident happened in the steel plant’s TSM plant after the machine was accidentally turned on by a co-worker even before the worker had fully emerged from the machine after completing maintenance work. His feet from ankle down were removed at the Gokulam Hospital, Salem.

 

The worker, a resident of Rettai Puliyamaram, Mettur, reportedly worked in this section for the last 4 years as a contract worker with contractor M/s Metrobalt, although works of a permanent nature are not to be left to contract employees.

 

No police complaint has been filed, and it is not known whether the accident has been reported to the Factories Inspectorate as required under law.
