CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has stayed the operation of a GO dated May 17, 2005 of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) identifying a place near the SIPCOT Industrial Estate in Gummidipoondi to dump hazardous waste materials.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice Praba Srideven granted the interim injunction while admitting a writ petition from the Sithiraj Kandigai village Panchayat president Suresh, last week.

Petitioner contended that dumping the waste from the nearby industries at the place identified by the Pollution Control Board would affect the environment of the area. It would also contaminate the ground water. They had raised objections at the public hearings held recently in Tiruvallur district collectorate.

Despite the protests by the villagers, the PCB had passed the GO, petitioner contended.
