The National Green Tribunal, Southern Bench, has set aside the clearance given to the expansion of Strides Shasun Pharmaceuticals Limited, Cuddalore.

This order was passed on the appeal filed by Puducherry Environment Protection Association, represented by its Secretary, K. Irisappan, who alleged that the pharmaceutical company had been causing severe air and water pollution, and the people of Cuddalore, a critically polluted area, continue to suffer on account of the unitÂ’s violations.

Strides Shasun Pharmaceuticals Ltd is located at SIPCOT Industrial Estate, Kudikadu village, Cuddalore.

The Puducherry Environment Protection Association alleged that though the industrial unit obtained environmental clearance at first in year 2000 for 13 products, it had expanded illegally. It was taking steps to further expand capacity and production on the strength of the illegal environmental clearance dated April 4 granted by the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority. After hearing both sides, the Southern Bench of National Green Tribunal set aside the environmental clearance.
