Kanimozhi pulls up polluting industries in Cuddalore

CUDDALORE: Rajya Sabha MP and daughter of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, Kanimozhi, pulled up the management of the chemical industrial SIPCOT estate for causing adverse impact onthe environment and people in the coastal town.


Kanimozhi conducted an inspection following a petition submitted by Kattumanar Koil Legislator D Ravikumar here on Monday morning. She inspected Shasun Chemicals and Tagros Chemical Ltd for nearly two hours.


She pulled up the management of the industries for violating TNPCB norms and emitting harmful gases in the ambient air. She also directed district collector Rajendra Ratnoo to conduct a health survey among the people, especially women, children and aged persons, in villages surrounding the SIPCOT.


In a petition, MLA Ravikumar stated that a Nagpur-based organisation – National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) had conducted a study in August last year and identified industries posing a serious threat to the people in the region.


People faced the risk of developing cancer, eye-related ailments and chronic lung disorder. Ravikumar requested the Government to monitor the industries and initiate stern action against the erring ones.


Among others, Minister for Health MRK Panneerselvam, Collector Rajendra Ratnoo, MLAs G Aiyappan and Saba Rajendran accompanied the MP. Earlier, Kanimozhi inspected Manjakuppam Ground which is to hold the first DMK Women Wing Conference on May 24 and 25.


Speaking to journalists at the site Kanimozhi said that several lakh women will take part in the historic conference. Later, she participated in a meeting at Kurinjipadi.
