Groundtruths: Status of Hazardous Wastes and Pollution in SIPCOT Chemical Estate, Cuddalore
KILLER TSUNAMI’S IMPACT ON SIPCOT INDUSTRIAL ESTATE
- The river water has washed out the toxic sludge from behind the SPIC factory, although the landfill seemed untouched.
- Water had entered CUSECS 6 near Victory Chemicals, which is located virtually on the banks of the River Uppanar, in flagrant violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone notification. It may be pointed out at this point that the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board has chosen to ignore, even sought to regularize, this violation despite repeated reminders about this infraction. The extent of damage sustained at this pump house is not known.
- The mountain of toxic wastes stored behind Victory Chemicals towers above the flimsy compound wall abutting the river. Much of this waste has been washed out into the river.
- The condition of the marine effluent outfall is not known, but given the force of the wave and the currents generated on 26 December, it is important to assess the condition of the effluent outfall.(Link to the letter sent to the SCMC and PCB about the effects of Tsunami on SIPCOT)
