April 14, 2012. Mettur – Since around midday on Friday the 13th, residents of Ramamurthy Nagar, Mettur, are suffering the effects of intense noise pollution from Malco’s coal thermal power plant. The noise is due to blasts of steam from the power plant, residents say. With exams going on and two schools in the vicinity, the noise has seriously affected local students who have been unable to study. Residents said that the loud explosive noises have robbed them of their sleep and peace. The worst affected are the pregnant women, infants, the seriously ill and the elderly. Malco has failed to control the noise pollution despite repeated complaints. TNPCB’s local officials did not attend to phone calls, and a representation has been made to the Member Secretary of the TNPCB.
