Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board appoints Local Environment Committee

Cuddalore, 4 March, 2008 — The Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) through its letter dated 3.3.2008 has appointed a local committee comprising of Government officials, elected local body officials, community environmental monitors and NGO representatives to discuss the ongoing industrial pollution in Cuddalore SIPCOT area with the company officials. This is the first such committee set up by the Board in the state, and is seen to be a result of the persistent monitoring activity undertaken by the SIPCOT Area Community Environmental Monitors (SACEM).

The Committee will have weekly meetings to take up one company at a time, and complete a review of 17 industries in SIPCOT area by 27 June, 2008.
