CUDDALORE: The Consumer Federation Tamil Nadu (CONFET) adopted a resolution at its general body meeting held here recently urging the authorities “to take penal measures against industries that are indiscriminately exploiting groundwater without permission.”
Project coordinator of the forum T. Arulselvam, who chaired the meeting, told The Hindu that the resolution noted that many of the units in SIPCOT Industrial Estates were drawing groundwater without legal approval. Steps have now been taken to set up about a dozen dyeing factories in the SIPCOT Industrial Estate area and at Periyakuppam in Cuddalore district. “The forum has warned that if appropriate conservation measures are not taken, the availability and quality of groundwater would suffer,” he said.
