CUDDALORE: The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has ordered the immediate closure of the SPIC Pharmaceuticals Division in the SIPCOT Industrial Estate here, and stoppage of electricity supply to the unit.

In the August 16, 2007 order, Board chairman N. Sundaradevan said the action was taken under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 as amended in 1988 for the unit’s failure to comply with the pollution control norms. During the inspection on July 12, it was found that the mycelia sludge yard was emitting a strong odour causing air pollution. The unit’s effluent treatment methods were not in conformity with the pollution control standards, he said.
