Cuddalore, Jan 1: A number of projects estimated to cost Rs 27,000 crore, including thermal power plants, port and ship building yard and petroleum refinery, would come up in and around Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy said yesterday.
Inaugurating the Varumun Kappom scheme in the district, Veerasamy said a 4,000 megawatt thermal power plant at a cost of over Rs 16,000 crore and another Rs 5,000 crore 1,330 megawatt thermal plant would soon be set up by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.
Cuddalore will have a power corporation for itself, he said.
A Rs 4,000 crore new port and ship building yard would be built by a Korean company for which 1,000 acres of land had been acquired by the government.
Andhra Pradesh-based Nagarjuna Power Corporation would set up a Rs 2,000-crore petroleum refinery unit, he said.
The new projects have already received government sanction, he added.
Under the new Varumun Kappom Thittam, Rs 100 crore would be allocated yearly for providing medical assistance to the poor in the state, he said.
