Chennai, 23 January 2007: Year 2007 has brought with itself a host of toxic facilities for SIPCOT residents. It was rumoured that the Tamil Nadu government was planning new facilities in the area following the perverse logic of polluting the already polluted. But this rumour is taking a shape of an ugly reality now. First it was the Chemplast PVC plant, then the proposal for textile park and now a 1320 MW capacity thermal power plant is being proposed to be located in the Kudikadu and Thyagavalli villages of Cuddalore. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission announced the project through an advertisement yesterday and invited comments and objections on the proposed project.
The 1320 MW thermal power plant will be built with an investment of Rs.6004 crores and its first phase will be operational by April 2011. The project proposes to use coal imported from Indonesia and/or Australia.
