PCB official visits SIPCOT, Pollution Patrol by SACEM shows low emissions than usual

Cuddalore, 18 March 2006: Pollution Patrol conducted by SACEM monitors today showed relatively low level of odour and emissions from the industrial complex and the reason for this is not the eagerness of the industries to curb pollution but a two day visit of a higher official of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board. It has been reported that the official would be inspecting various units in SIPCOT for two days. SACEM monitors inform that it is a general practice of the SIPCOT units to curb their emissions when the officials visit the site. The visit of the officials brings the much wanted relief to the residents of SIPCOT who otherwise are forced to live in the stench filled environment.

SACEM monitors also found out that Southern Pigments, an errant unit in SIPCOT, which was operating despite closure orders was finally shut, attributing this once again to the result of the inspection by the higher official. SACEM has observed a marked difference in the state of affairs of the complex whenever there is an official visiting the area and thus recommends that these officials should permanently reside in the complex to bring about the much awaited improvement in the state of
environment of SIPCOT Cuddalore
