Uppanar pollution: TNPCB has turned a blind eye to the woes of fisherfolk

Cuddalore, 23 April 2006: On 23rd April, the fishermen reported severe skin itching once they entered the water of Uppanar behind Arkema Peroxides. According to the reports numerous similar complaints have been sent to the pollution control board but they are yet to see any changes.

Health of river Uppanar has been drastically declining, the cause being  illegal discharges in the river from the industries of SIPCOT. According to investigations carried out by SACEM in February 2006, the river health had suffered significantly after the change in the LAEC in SIPCOT. Reason being the laxness of the new LAEC. The PCB has failed to take action on any of the various complaints of river pollution and once again have clearly indicated that the industries in SIPCOT are allowed to thrive at the cost of human and environmental health.
