Tagros Chemicals caught red handed dumping hazardous waste in SIPCOT area

Cuddalore, 6 December 2005: Tagros Chemicals was caught red handed dumping hazardous wastes near Vyaramkuppam village main road in the Sonanchavadi village on 27 November 2005. According to the local sources the incident took place at about 5 in the morning. A tanker TN 51 Q 9952, carrying sludge from the factory dumped the waste near the village road in the premises of Senthil Velan (S/o Shankar). The dumping site is close to the drinking water borewell in Sonnanchavadi. Incidentally Senthil is also the contractor for the tankers for Tagros Chemicals. A complaint in this regard has been filed with the Cuddalore Old Town Police Station, District Collector, District Environment Engineer and Local Area Environment Committee on Cuddalore. The complainant, Mr. P. R. V. Jagannathan who is the President of the Semmankuppam Panchayat, also mentioned in his complaint that the ground water and the land in the area has been contaminated due to the dumping and strict action needs to be taken against the parties involved in such illegal activity. No odour was reported from the site of the dumping since it was raining heavily and it is suspected that the odours have been supressed by the rain, the colour of the waste was yellow. Because of the flood in the area after the recent rains the waste is feared to be mixed with the flood water and contaminated the surrounding areas. No action has been taken by the TNPCB in this matter so far.
