Police Lathicharge on Striking Workers of Pioneer Miyagi; At least 15 Injured

Cuddalore, 12 August 2008: The Cuddalore police lathicharged more than 300 workers of CITU Union from Pioneer Miyagi yesterday for blocking the entrance of the unit while on strike. According to the sources this incident took place at about 4 pm yesterday when the workers from the unit and their family members, who have been sitting on an indefinite strike since 12 July 2008, decided to block the factory entrance as a strategy to force the management to have a dialogue with them. Sources inform that as soon as the workers blocked the gate the police stepped in with lathicharge to disperse the crowd. At least 15 persons including 5 women were seriously injured in this incident. They have been admitted to the Cuddalore General Hospital for treatment.

Local groups have condemned this brutal act of police towards the workers who have been on a peaceful strike for more than a month demanding safe working conditions and better environmental responsibility by the company. Groups have demanded investigation into the matter and strict action against the errant police officers for yesterday’s brutality.
