Uppanar Pollution: Fishermen Report Fish Kill

Cuddalore, 26 January 2009: Fishermen fishing in river Uppanar on 25 January at about 3.30 am reported rotten dead body odour and fish kill. According to the fishermen very intense odour of rotten dead body and foam like substance on the water was noticed from the river behind Kudikadu village. Fishermen also reported increase number of dead “kelithee” specie of fish in their catch which was unusual. Kelithee is small bottom dwelling specie found in the river Uppnar. Though they fishermen did not report any skin related problems, they mentioned that the odour of the water stayed on to their bodies for long during the day.

 

A formal complaint of this incident has been filed with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
