Will Pollution Stop on August 4?

Cuddalore, 2 August, 2006: Yesterday SACEM monitors received a call from the senior officials of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) informing them that a joint pollution patrol of TNPCB and SACEM will be conducted on 4th August 2006. A senior TNPCB official from the Chennai head office will be present during the patrol. Given past experience, SACEM is willing to bet that SIPCOT industries will scale down pollution on 4 August to impress visiting officials. Pollution will continue until 4 August, and resume after the officials leave, monitors predict. Keeping this in mind, SACEM has planned series of patrols in the lead up to and following the joint patrol. The first of these patrols were conducted during the early hours of 2 August, 2006. Odour levels observed during this patrol were between 3 and 6 on a scale of ten.
