Commuters on Cuddalore-Chidambaram Road Gassed by SPIC

Cuddalore, 15 February 2007: In an another incident that occurred on Monday, 12 February the commuters on the Cuddalore-Chidambaram highway got gassed by the emissions of SPIC Pharma. The incident occurred at about 5:15 pm when about 50 people heading towards Cuddalore Old Town from Perangipettai in a state transport bus reported symptoms of suffocation and vomiting after inhaling emissions from SPIC. The bus had reportedly stopped near the SPIC factory en route. A strong odour of rotten eggs was also reported.

Monday’s incident has instilled fear in the minds of the commuters on this route and many of them feel unsafe while using this highway through the SIPCOT estate. Such incidents of commuters being gassed have occurred before but no action has been taken on the issue. An official complaint demanding investigation and action has been filed with the TNPCB and the District Collector by the Eachangadu villagers.
