24 May 2021, Cuddalore: This is the second industrial accident in 10 days at SIPCOT complex, a contract worker was severely injured and hospitalised after falling into a chemical tank in Tanfac industries.
On 13 May 2021, there was a major fire accident in Crimsum Organics pvt ltd that led to death of 4 people and many were injured. The community and SACEM members had demanded safety audits in all SIPCOT units by an interdepartmental committee including pollution control board officials post this accident.
In about 10 days after, another accident has put a contract worker to chemical burns all over his body. It is reported that there was a fire inside the plot of Tanfac industries and when workers were trying to put off the fire, a first shift contract worker fell into the sulfur storage tank accidentally.
The injured worker, Ganesh Kumar aged 38 years is a resident of Angalamman Karaikadu. He was hospitalised and is reported to be under treatment.
These recurring accidents in this pandemic time, is a serious threat to the safety, health of workers and the community. Such repeated accidents reveal the lack of industrial safety conditions in SIPCOT industrial complex and negligence of the industries and regulators towards workers’ health and safety.
A complaint has been made by SACEM members to the concerned authorities to take immediate necessary action on the accident stressing on conduction of safety audits in all the industrial units of SIPCOT industrial complex.
