Police Releases the Truck Containing Chemicals from Shasun Without Verification

Cuddalore, 24 January 2008: The Cuddalore police released the seized truck containing suspected chemical waste at about 11.30 pm last night without any proper verification. Yesterday TNPCB and the District Administration had taken samples of the chemicals to verify the claims of the company that it was aldehyde, a raw material for their Pondicherry unit. Even though results are awaited the police has already gone ahead and taken a decision in the favour of the unit. Even the TNPCB did not object to this decision. This move has raised several doubts in the minds of the citizens who are curious to know that why the police and the TNPCB acted in such haste to get rid of their only evidence in hand.

SACEM suspects that this move of the police and the TNPCB personnel is to cover up the illegalities in the transport and disposal of the hazardous waste by the unit. A complaint in this regard has been filed with the senior police officials and the District Collector.
